Contemporary computers put the ALU and control units into a single integrated circuit known as the Central Processing Unit or CPU. Typically, computer memory is placed on top of a small number of integrated circuits near the CPU. Tools that occupies most of the space in the computer is ancilliary system (for example, to provide electricity) or device I / O.

Some larger computers differ from the above model on the one main thing - they have multiple CPUs and control units working simultaneously.
